Forest industry is a major user and supplier of biofuels. Sawmills use bark and shavings internally as fuel. The surplus goes to district heating plants, production of refined biofuels and the board industry. Other residual products from the sawmills are chipped. The bulk, the damp chips, is used for paper pulp in the pulp industry, whereas dry chips go to the fuel sector. The pulp industry uses its spent liquors as fuel, a residual product from manufacturing chemical pulp. Spent liquors contributed 34 TWh in 2003, a third of total bioenergy provision in Sweden. Large amounts of electricity and steam are generated when spent (black) liquors are combusted in soda boilers. With continued improvement of the technology for black liquor gasification the sector’s electricity production could increase significantly.
