Key Stakeholders Gather to Discuss Solutions for Tanzania’s Power Outages
Involving key stakeholders in clean energy production has been cited as a solution to frequent power outages that disrupt industrial production and entrepreneurship, thereby hindering the country’s economic growth.
Natural gas is one of Tanzania’s available energy resources, with reserves estimated at 57.54 trillion cubic feet. Of this, 47.4 trillion cubic feet have been discovered in deep-sea areas, while 10.12 trillion cubic feet are onshore.
Speaking on January 24 in Dar es Salaam during a meeting with energy stakeholders and industrial executives, Clarke Energy’s Deputy General Manager, Tarak Jani, said frequent power outages limit industries’ capacity to manufacture affordable products for Tanzania’s economy. He called for collaborative efforts between the government and stakeholders to find a lasting solution.
“Tanzania’s challenge is not power generation, but reliable distribution. Many industries experience losses due to power outages, which significantly reduce production efficiency,” said Jani.
He explained that Clarke Energy has supported industrial production growth by offering advanced systems and technical support services to strengthen the country’s energy systems.
“In collaboration with the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) and the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), Clarke Energy provides power plants which utilise natural gas to offer industries cleaner energy solutions, which is more environmentally friendly compared to diesel, coal and others heavier fuel sources,” he added.
Jani also noted that the company provides training for its customers on using their natural gas power plants efficiently, including how to recover heat, steam, or cooling from the exhaust section of the power plant, which also contributes to reducing carbon emissions.
“We aim to take concrete steps to improve the energy sector in Tanzania by partnering with key organisations like TANESCO and TPDC to ensure reliable electricity for industries, institutions, and communities,” he said.
Clarke Energy’s General Manager, Emile Hamman, stated that the company prioritises strengthening the energy sector through collaboration with industries, independent power producers (IPPs), and specific government agencies.
“Clarke Energy does not directly invest in energy generation projects; instead, it provides power generation equipment and aftersales services to its customers. For instance, the power generation station at Somanga in Lindi Region is one of the locations where we have facilitated energy production using natural gas,” Hamman explained.
He also revealed plans to expand the company’s services to regions with high industrial activity, such as Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, and Arusha, while relying on TPDC to improve gas distribution.
“By increasing the number of industrial manufacturers using clean energy, we believe we can enhance economic efficiency and contribute to the country’s development,” Hamman said.
Hamman emphasised that Clarke Energy is operated by Tanzanians across various levels, from top management to technical services. This commitment demonstrates the company’s dedication to supporting local development and expertise in clean energy solutions.
A testimony provided by one of the company’s customer representatives, also present, commended the efforts of the Clarke Energy team in delivering its 5-megawatt (MW) power plant, which included the front-end engineering designs (FEED), installation, commissioning, and currently provide maintenance for the plant.
“Despite our assurance that there was no chance of success, they never abandoned Lodhia. They pursued further studies and seemed keen on providing us with a solution. They even went as far as installing analysing machines to determine our load demand and behaviour, including assessing our load harmonics, peak and off-peak demands, and other factors.
After monitoring for a week, we held a discussion, and ultimately, they presented a feasible solution,” said Manoj S. G., the Group CEO at Lodhia Industries Limited.
