Element Markets is partnering with Republic Services, Inc., one of the largest waste companies in the U.S., to develop a power project at a regional landfill in North Carolina, which will come online in 2012. Drawing from our extensive project development experience, we conducted exhaustive technical analysis to determine the most economically beneficial use of the landfill gas, concluding that the power project is the ideal solution. Initially the project will be sized at 6.4 megawatts (MW), with the total capacity of the plant reaching 12 MWs.
Our design utilizes the latest gas cleaning and power technologies and will initially produce 45,000 – 55,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity, which is enough to power more than 4,000 homes annually. The electricity will be sold to an in-state utility under a long-term power purchase agreement.
The project has received strong local support. Gas that otherwise would be flared into the atmosphere will be turned into clean renewable energy and added to the power grid. This reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is equivalent to taking more than 33,000 cars off of the road. The project is also creating new jobs and bringing significant tax revenue to the local community.
