Agrecalc
Agrecalc is a carbon reporting tool developed by combining the on-farm practical expertise of SAC Consulting with world-class agricultural science and research of SRUC. What started as a small tool to help calculate the carbon footprint of imported lamb in 2007, grew into a fully-fledged Software as a Service. Agrecalc is a precise instrument that offers both breadth and depth of on-farm and through-the-supply-chain calculations of carbon footprint. Agrecalc went online for farmers to use in 2014, and it has since been collating farm benchmark data from thousands of farms. The carbon reporting tool has been used as the designated software to deliver carbon audits under the Scottish Farm Advisory Service (FAS) (2016), the Beef Efficiency Scheme (BES) (2016), the Scottish Farm Business Survey (2018) in Scotland, as well as several government programmes in Northern Ireland and Wales since 2020.

About Us
Agrecalc is the leading agricultural resource efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions calculator developed by Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) and its commercial arm SAC Consulting. Today Agrecalc stands as an independent agri-tech company that is acknowledging its roots in these two institutions.
The synergy between SRUC and SAC Consulting is a testament to the power of collaboration. By bridging the gap between research and practice, we aim to create a holistic approach to addressing the challenges faced by the agricultural and ecological sectors.
Agrecalc partnerships with the higher education sector and the business services allows for the seamless translation of research findings into practical solutions that directly benefit the farming community and the environment.
Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) stands as a leader in agricultural and rural research, education, and consulting. With a rich history of over a century, SRUC is committed to addressing the challenges faced by the agricultural sector and rural communities. Their research areas encompass a wide range of subjects, including ecology, livestock production, crop science, and sustainable agriculture practices.
SAC Consulting complements SRUC’s research endeavours with its practical, real-world expertise. As a part of SRUC, SAC Consulting is dedicated to providing tailored, actionable advice to farmers, landowners, and rural businesses. With a team of experienced consultants, SAC Consulting offers services that range from farm management to environmental conservation, focusing on enhancing productivity while maintaining environmental sustainability.
The key highlights of Agrecalc partnerships are:SRUC’s research areas, particularly in ecology, provide the foundation for evidence-based solutions. The researchers delve into topics such as biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable land management, contributing to a better understanding of the intricate relationships between agriculture and the environment.
Agrecalc also has a long history for providing key tools for research studies to government on climate mitigation options and net-zero roadmaps. The tool allows baselining using research models, scenario testing, and detailed benchmarking, drawing from the thousands of real and verified datapoints in the system.
SAC Consulting brings decades of hands-on experience to the table. Our consultants work directly with farmers, offering personalised guidance on crop management, animal husbandry, soil health, and more.
This practical knowledge is invaluable for implementing sustainable practices on the ground.
This is why Agrecalc has been identified in the Scottish Government National Testing Programme Phase 1 as the only carbon footprint calculator with consultant capacity to offer adviser-validated mitigation recommendations with its carbon audits.
The mitigation measures that come out of an Agrecalc carbon audit give farmers the information they need to make decisions on farm while helping increase resilience against weather extremes, hikes in input costs and changing market conditions.
Together with SRUC and SAC Consulting, Agrecalc partnerships drive innovation by integrating research insights with practical applications.
This results in cutting-edge solutions that improve agricultural productivity, enhance environmental stewardship, and ensure the long-term viability of rural communities.
Agrecalc has the ability to capture all farm enterprises, with the results expressed as whole farm, or allocated by enterprise and product.
SAC Consulting experts validate all the data entered, to ensure data quality. The consultants have access to a large database of validated carbon datasets (10,000+ farms, 20,000+ farm reports).
Agrecalc partnerships don’t just stop at research and consulting. We believe in knowledge sharing. Through training programs, workshops, and seminars, we empower individuals in the agriculture sector to adopt the latest techniques and strategies for a more sustainable future.
At Agrecalc, we are dedicated to cultivating a thriving and sustainable agricultural sector, and our partnership between SRUC and SAC Consulting is at the heart of this endeavor. Together, we are building a stronger future for agriculture and the environment.
