About us
National Grid (LSE: NG; NYSE:NGG) is an electricity and gas company that connects consumers to energy sources through its networks.
The company is at the heart of one of the greatest challenges facing our society – to create new, sustainable energy solutions for the future and developing an energy system that underpins economic prosperity in the 21st century. National Grid holds a vital position at the centre of the energy system and it ‘joins everything up’.
In the northeast US, we connect more than seven million gas and electric customers to vital energy sources, essential for our modern lifestyles. In Great Britain, we run the gas and electricity systems that our society is built on, delivering gas and electricity across the country.
National Grid delivers electricity to approximately 3.3 million customers in Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island. We will operate and maintain the distribution system on Long Island, under contract to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), until December 2013, and own over 4,000 megawatts of contracted electricity generation, providing power to over one million LIPA customers. We are the largest distributor of natural gas in the northeast US, serving approximately 3.4 million customers in New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
The electricity industry connects generation sources to homes and businesses via transmission and distribution networks. Electricity is sold to consumers by companies who have bought it from the generators and pay to use the networks across which it is transmitted.
The gas industry connects producers, processors, storage, transmission and distribution network operators, as well as suppliers to industrial, commercial and domestic users.
History
National Grid is dedicated to being the world's premier network utility, primarily focused on delivering energy safely, reliably and efficiently. We own the high-voltage electricity transmission system in England and Wales and operate the system across Great Britain. We also own and operate the high pressure gas transmission system in Britain. In addition, we have electricity transmission systems in the northeastern US.Our local distribution networks deliver gas to around 11 million consumers in an area covering approximately a quarter of Great Britain.
