US Cleantech Integrator Ameresco Inc. Secures Project to Build RNG Plant in Layton, Utah

Ameresco Inc. (NYSE:AMRC), a leading US cleantech integrator, has been commissioned to develop a renewable natural gas (RNG) plant at the Layton landfill in Utah. This project was awarded by the Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District (WIWMD), which oversees waste disposal and recycling in Davis and Morgan Counties.

WIWMD has chosen Ameresco to design and construct the RNG plant at its Davis Landfill, marking a significant milestone in sustainable waste management. The facility will capture methane-rich landfill gas, a byproduct of decomposing organic waste, and convert it into RNG, a valuable renewable energy source.

'Transforming landfill gas into RNG is a critical step toward a cleaner planet. It’s more logical to utilize the methane already in our atmosphere rather than drilling for natural gas deep within the earth,' stated Michael Bakas, Executive Vice President at Ameresco.

Once operational, the Davis RNG plant aims to replace over 8 million British thermal units (BTUs) of fossil fuels annually, and prevent the emission of approximately 432,274 tonnes of CO2 per year, according to Ameresco’s projections.

Ameresco will own the RNG plant and will handle all aspects of the project, including design, engineering, construction, commissioning, and operational management.

This marks Ameresco’s second collaboration with WIWMD on landfill gas utilization. Nathan Rich, Executive Director of WIWMD, noted, 'Converting an environmental liability into a renewable energy asset aligns perfectly with our district’s mission. Having pioneered Utah’s first landfill gas-to-energy project nearly 20 years ago, we eagerly anticipate upgrading to a state-of-the-art RNG facility to meet today’s energy demands.'
