W2E Organic Power, CIYCOR and EISENMANN announce teaming on state-of-the-art green energy generation facility in Columbia
$23 Million Project to Process Organic Waste into Green Energy
Columbia, SC -- Three leaders in the renewable energy industry announced a teaming arrangement to construct and operate a state-of-the-art anaerobic digestion facility at the corner of Shop and Beltline Roads here in Columbia, SC.
The 48,000 Tonne per year, 3.2 MW, facility will begin construction under the supervision of W2E Organic Power, and will process organic waste, turning it into green natural gas for electric power production. CIYCOR, a worldwide renewable energy and construction company, is co-developer and financial partner. EISENMANN, a global engineering and advanced technology firm, is providing the anaerobic digestion technology and engineering.
The W2E facility is a truly sustainable, renewable energy facility returning the nutrients from the organic waste back to the earth. Closing the loop, the soil amendment produced by the facility will be used for local agriculture as well as commercial and residential landscape applications. The organic waste consists of food, grease, waste produce, yard, and several other sources which together provide a nutrient and energy rich mix from which the anaerobic process converts the waste into clean natural biogas.
Daniel Rickenmann, CEO of W2E Organic Power, characterized the Columbia facility as the flagship of W2E’s national build-out of anaerobic digestion facilities. “We have developed a significant group of partners with waste streams for our system and we look forward to beginning this brand new effort to process waste into energy. The strength of the project has been greatly enhanced by the addition of CIYCOR to the team, and we couldn’t be more positive about the early completion of the Columbia facility.” Mr. Rickenmann said.
W2E Organic Power is a small technology business developing anaerobic digestion systems in South Carolina and the Eastern United States. Anaerobic digestion production facilities are capital intensive to build, but they provide a two pronged solution to the renewable energy arena:
- Anaerobic digestion takes organic waste as a feedstock to produce green natural gas reducing pressure on landfills and providing an environmentally responsible option for the disposal of organic waste from municipal, residential and commercial sources.
- Anaerobic digestion produces clean, green biogas which is used to provide three green energy products: Green natural gas, green electricity, or green compressed natural gas (gCNG).
W2E has commitments from a variety of commercial waste streams including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Dorado, Farmers’ Market, Harvest Hope Food Bank, McEntire Produce, Palmetto Health, Pascon, Quest Recycling, Pontiac Foods, Walmart and WP Rawls.
The project in Columbia is the flagship that sets the standard for all of W2E’s future anaerobic digestion facilities. As the first of its kind in the United States, the Columbia facility marks a new way to reduce green house gas emissions, while providing an alternative source of energy to the electrical grid. Additional facilities are planned in the near future at Gastonia, NC, and Baton Rouge, LA.
W2E organic power will be fed into the electrical grid and purchased by Santee Cooper, South Carolina’s state-owned electric and water utility, under a long term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). Additional power purchase agreements are being negotiated to account for use of expanded green natural gas, and potentially green compressed natural gas in future years.
Site construction will begin in the coming months. The W2E facility is scheduled to begin processing
waste in 2012. When completed, the digester plant will accept all forms of organic waste from a
variety of sources.
