Biomass Fuels
Biomass is biological material derived from living organisms - in the context of biomass for energy this is used to mean plant based material, usually wood from forestry, processing wood or crops, sometimes specifically grown for energy applications. Generally, in the context of biomass boilers, the common fuels are wood chip, wood pellet and logs. Biomass fuel is considered ‘carbon neutral’ – it takes carbon out of the atmosphere while it is growing and returns it as it is burned. On a sustainable basis, biomass is harvested as part of a constantly replenished crop, maintaining a closed carbon cycle with no net change in atmospheric CO2 levels.

Why Choose Biomass
Why Choose Biomass
- Qualifying installations receive government subsidy under the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme
- Biomass fuels currently give savings on fuel costs compared to other sources e.g. oil, coal and LPG
- Reduced carbon footprint – wood produces lower carbon emissions when compared with fossil fuels
- Environmental benefits – harnessing energy by burning waste wood that might otherwise be sent to a landfill site is better for the environment
- Social benefits – by supporting a local fuel source which is widely available throughout the UK will result in local investment in the wood processing industry and offer employment opportunities.
