FLR - Wood Chip Drying Floors
Taking advantage of the UK Government’s Renewable Heat Initiative (RHI) many customers have installed biomass-heating systems and use woodchip as the boiler fuel. Woodchip is, of course, a sustainable fuel and can be purchased ready dried from commercial woodchip suppliers.

Products Details
Alternatively, other biomass users are either self-reliant on timber from their own forest resources or have a ready supply of virgin chip from local timber yards. Like the commercial suppliers of woodchip the biomass user may opt to store virgin timber and season it naturally, usually over a 12-month period to achieve appropriate moisture content before chipping.
The Flach & Le-Roy drive-on floor system provides biomass woodchip users and commercial woodchip suppliers an accelerated drying process to reduce the virgin chip moisture content to the boiler manufacturer’s recommended level.
Typically, a 200Kw boiler and heat exchanger system will enable a 12m x 7m x 1.5m (40 tonne) capacity store to dry virgin G50/G30 woodchip from 40% to 25%. Such a facility will dry approximately 115 m3 of woodchip every 2 to 3 days.
Store Construction
A standard Flach & Le-Roy drive-on floor designed for agricultural users will support a 10 tonne axle load on pneumatic tyres. The hardwood top boards can be supplied either nailed or screwed to the bearers depending on the frequency of batch drying operation and the perceived rate of wear. This floor design is adequate for normal farm machinery applications.
For commercial suppliers of woodchip utilising heavy machinery above 10 tonnes the floor is designed and fitted with additional floor bearers to cater for the higher loads. All top boards are supplied in Keruing hardwood and each board can be screwed to the bearers to enable simple changeover when boards eventually begin to wear. The timber main air duct carrying heated air from the biomass/heat exchanger system is typically constructed from hardwood frames clad with hardwood faced ply. For a floor 12m x 7m and stacking at 1.5m high the main air duct will be 1.2m wide and approximately 15m long.
