Fixed-Bed System
At the 2008 IFAT in Munich, Abucon Milieutechniek was introduced as the supplier of the innovative high load bearing fixed-bed system Biotextil Cleartec. Abucon Milieutechniek is responsible for the sale, manufacture, supply and installation of Biotextil Cleartec’s flexible, area-restricted fixed-bed system for sewage water purification systems in the Netherlands and Belgium/Flandern. The fixed-bed system is a traditional and trusted method of biological water purification. Hitherto, the advantages of such high load bearing systems have however largely been cancelled out by problems in managing and controlling the process. Above all, problems were posed by thick mud layers and danger of blockage.

Innovative
With its innovative use of patented Biotextil Cleartec as a carrier for the mud, Cleartec was able to achieve a breakthrough in the use of fixed-bed systems. The flexible fixed bed, which is kept in motion by means of aeration, prevents the accumulation of thick mud deposits. Thin mud layers on the large surface of the textile fabric and maximised oxygen transfer provide optimal results for biological water purification. The high mud concentration guarantees a low mud load and high mud lifespan, making a good nitrification process possible.
How the system functions
The system’s function is based on:
- The use of the natural biological possibilities for efficiency improvement and, as a result, an increase in capacity of ca. 30%
- A reduction in energy costs and, in turn, of CO2 emissions, through optimisation of the biological process
Version with cage frames
The Cleartec® fixed-bed system consists of (prefab) modules in which Cleartec® Biotextil is affixed to cage frames; Cleartec Biotextil units can be placed in an existing active mud installation. The cages are fitted with an Aquaconsult aeration plate on their floors.
The modules can be removed and replaced with no interruption to operations. The Biotextil Cleartec are made of polypropylene ([-CH2-CH(CH3)-]n). The distances between aeration, Biotextil and water level are fixed, as is the distance between the textile strips. The biomass in the installation affixes itself to the flexible carrier material, but is also present in the installation in suspended form.
Interesting applications
The flexible fixed-bed system can yield substantial economic advantages in two ways:
- When enlarging the capacity of existing biological water purification systems
- By limiting investment and maintenance costs when designing new water purification systems
Advantages
The chief advantages provided by the Biotextil Cleartec fixed-bed system are as follows:
- Increased capacity of existing systems
- Reduced investment costs for projects involving the construction of new systems
- Increased dry-dust content without supplementary stress to post-purification processes
- Excellent nitrogen removal
- Increased stability in connection with changing hydraulic stress and contaminant problems
- Reduction of remaining mud volume
- Increased operational stability
- Monitoring of aeration of fixed-bed-biology during operation by means of a retractable system
- No danger of blockage as a result of Biotextil Cleartec’s flexible bed
Proven technology
The Biotextil Cleartec system has been deployed successfully in long-term tests and reference projects for water purification systems of 6,000 i.e. up to 250,000 i.e. for longer than 10 years.
Principle
With conventional biological systems, only the characteristics of the micro-organisms in the suspended mud component are utilised.
Through supplementary application of the Biotextil Cleartec fixed-bed system, it is possible to obtain a more extensive biological cycle through the microorganisms deposited on the fixed bed. The fixed and suspended biological cycles complement one another excellently. The biological cycle is substantially improved and extended through, e.g., differences in mud lifespan, or a greatly augmented quantity of microorganisms.
In this process, the natural self-cleansing effect is intensified by the water current itself. As a result, the degrading activity of both suspended and sedentary organisms is stimulated. One prerequisite consists in optimised operations through the deployment of Aquaconsult aerators in combination with the Biotextil Cleartec fixed-bed system.
