Despite being located in the North Atlantic and wind being a constant in the country, there has been only limited development of wind power project. A pilot project by the national power company Landsvirkjun set up two wind turbines with a combined capacity of 2 MW as an R&D project in 2013. With average capacity factor that is exceeding offshore numbers for wind parks elsewhere, it proves that there are great opportunities for wind power development in Iceland. Today, there are several players looking at wind development in various regions of Iceland. Combined with baseload capacity hydropower and geothermal power, it surely would expand the availability of price competitive green power. We are working with the different parties engaged in development.

What are the benefits of using wind energy?

Renewable
Wind is an emissions free source of energy which is renewable. Using wind to produce energy has less effects on the environment than other energy sources.

Small Footprint
Each wind turbine has a relatively small physical footprint. Groups of wind turbines, like wind farms, are located on open land, on mountain ridges, or offshore in lakes or the ocean.

Baseload
Wind power has no effect on base load. Since the base load providers cannot be ramped down if wind turbines produce power when there is no or little peak load. The extra electricity produced has to be dumped into the ground or the turbines turned off.

Clean
Wind turbines do not release emissions that can pollute the air or water with rare exceptions. They do do not require water for cooling. Wind turbines are able to reduce electricity generation from fossil fuels, which results in lower total air pollution and carbon dioxide emission.
