Challenges
Two key challenges associated with harnessing wave energy are addressed:
- Storm survivability: many devices can only oscillate between certain limits, and can incur damage at the extreme end of the transition point of oscillation (also known as the ‘end-stop problem’). End-stop loads and end-stop systems have been a significant cause for failure in previous wave devices, and is often a driver of large and costly structures.
- Fluctuating power input from ocean waves: Solutions to smoothen power variability over single wave cylces have been demonstrated for direct drive PTOs, but solutions addressing the variability over multiple wave cycles could improve the overall efficiency and economics of such drive trains.
WaveBoost solution
The WaveBoost project is looking to demonstrate innovative end-stop and power smoothing technology. These new solutions are expected to furhter improve the survivability and reliability of resonant Wave Energy Converters.
Expected benefits
- Improved survivability and reliability
- Improve grid integration
- PTO size reduction
- Increased energy production
Results
The project outcomes and results will be disseminated for the benefit of the ocean energy industry through published reports. These reports can be downloaded on the CORDIS website.
