Details
The internal condenser of the Short Path Evaporator provides minimal pressure drop, permitting high vacuum operation down to 0.001 mbar. High vacuum operation is then combined with Wiped Film rotor technology, enabling short residence time, which allows processing of many heat sensitive and difficult to distill products. Short Path Evaporation is also called molecular distillation, and a Short Path Evaporator is sometimes known as an SPE or SPDU (short path distillation unit).
Popular in many industries, Short Path Evaporation is used for a number of applications, including concentrating pharmaceutical ingredients, various oils, natural extracts, and viscous waxes.
Features
- Operating temperature up to 650°F. Low pressure and high heating temperature allow processing of many hard to distill products.
- Residence time of a few seconds, important for heat sensitive products
- Suitable for viscous products
- Excellent turn down capability
- Low product holdup, good for hazardous materials
- Low power requirements
Short Path Evaporation Applications
Short path evaporation is well suited for evaporation, concentration, distillation, and devolatilizing of products with high viscosity, high boiling temperature, and suspended solids.
A few typical applications include:
- Pharmaceuticals such as bulk drugs, natural and synthetic vitamins, esters
- Epoxy resins, plasticizers, stabilizers
- Fish oil, fatty acids and derivatives, glycerides, tocopherols
- Fine chemicals, silicone oils, higher alcohols
- Petrochemicals like base oils, lube oils, pitch and tar
- Natural extracts
- Distilling high boiling volatile components from residues containing catalysts in form of fines
- Fractionating of waxes into hard and super hard waxes
- Stripping of TDI from Prepolymer
- Distilling of high boiling volatile components from bitumen
- Used oil re-refining and distillation
How Short Path Evaporation Works
In a short path evaporator, the rotor cage assembly(top view illustrated at right) surrounds an internal condenser and revolves at moderate speeds. The cage type construction in a standard rotor allows placement of the internal condenser, extending the operating pressure capability from 1 mbar to 0.001 mbar. Applied heating temperature is in the range of 300°F to 650°F (149°C to 343°C).
Feed enters above the distributor and is spread into a thin film on the inside surface of the shell. The rollers on the rotor cage gently agitate the film.
The product travels down the heated surface in a very short time while generating vapors. These vapors flow through the rotor and condense on the internally mounted condenser. This short vapor path minimizes pressure drop.
The distilled product and the remaining bottoms are taken out through separate outlets.
