Sugar, Ethanol & Cogeneration
Sugar cane is one of the most efficient crops for the production of renewable energies in the form of ethanol and the cogeneration of electricity. Adecoagroowns Usina Monte Alegre, an industrial plant located in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, which is a regional leader in the production of sugar for the domestic market. This sugar refinery processes 1 million tons of sugar cane, produces over 30 million liters of hydrated alcohol (ethanol) and 80,000 tons of sugar annually. 14.000 hectares of sugar cane are cultivated in this region, which ensures the company´s supply, whose main product is Monte Alegre Sugar. In this plant we are also engaged in the cogeneration of energy for the local supply network.

One of Adecoagro´s main investment projects ...
One of Adecoagro´s main investment projects is the construction of new plants for the production of sugar and ethanol in Brazil, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The locations selected for developing our projects have ideal soils and climate conditions for the production of sugar cane, allowing to obtain high yields.
To meet this end, in August 2008 we opened a new sugar refinery called Angélica, located in the area of Angélica, Mato Grosso do Sul. This modern plant has a maximum milling capacity of, approximately, 4 million tons of sugar cane harvested in 55,000 hectares, producing hydrated ethanol, anhydrous ethanol, VHP sugar and selling energy to the local network.
In addition, we have another industrial project close to Angélica, in the city of Ivinhema, which construction will began in 2012, allowing us to generate enormous big productive efficiencies due to the existing economies of scale.
We expect to develop a processing capacity of 11 million tons of sugar cane annually in the next few years, which will place the company among the leading companies in Brazil. The new undertaking will require a total investment of USD 1 billion.
