Siting Studies/Development of Seismic Design Criteria
D'Appolonia has performed siting studies for power generation facilities ranging from large nuclear power plants to small cogeneration plants. For nuclear facilities we have performed comprehensive site exploration studies that included evaluation of regional and local geology and seismology. Typically large numbers of geotechnical borings were drilled and numerous piezometers were installed to define subsurface stratigraphy and ground water conditions. Extensive geophysical surveys were also performed for the purpose of defining site stratigraphy and for developing dynamic characteristics of subsurface strata. For nuclear sites the Operating Basis Earthquake (OBE) and Safe Shutdown Earthquake (SSE) were determined and these accelerations in combination with subsurface dynamic properties were used to model the behavior of site structures and to design structural elements. We have also performed other types of site studies including determination of flood levels associated with the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) and modeling of ground water aquifers to assess the potential for migration of contaminants. We have prepared regulatory submittals based upon data gained from siting studies and we have interacted with regulators in the approval process.
Power Plant Infrastructure Design/Rehabilitation
Remedial design of failed systems and planned upgrades to existing facilities represent a significant portion of D'Appolonia's business related to power generation. Most power generation facilities in the U.S. are of sufficient age that a substantial amount of maintenance and remediation is required to sustain their functionality. Some examples of D’Appolonia projects involving remedial design of failed systems include repair of structure foundations that settled following the collapse of a large pipeline, redesign of a cooling water intake that had become fouled, stabilization of turbine and equipment foundations, repair of embankment landslides, and repair of spillway gate structures and spillway channel concrete. Upgrades at power generation facilities are often driven by regulatory requirements for such as those for reducing atmospheric pollutants at fossil fuel plants and requirements for increasing spillway capacity/stability at hydroelectric dams. D’Appolonia is experienced in all aspects of geotechnical engineering, hydrology and hydraulic engineering, and structural engineering related to preparing remedial designs and upgrades.
Waste Facility Design & Combustion Ash/Coal Refuse Co-Disposal
Fossil-fuel power generating plants typically generate large quantities of wastes such as fly ash and scrubber residue that must be immobilized in engineered containment structures. Typically these wastes are isolated in earth embankment impoundments. D’Appolonia has designed earth embankment structures (i.e., dams) to retain water, aqueous wastes such as mine tailings slurry, fly ash, and solid and hazardous wastes. These structures must be stable and must limit effluents to regulatory limits. We have designed containment structures with both natural (compacted clay) and synthetic liners and with cap systems that provide a physical barrier to the environment. These designs have included instrumentation systems to detect effluent leakage. We are thoroughly familiar with permitting requirements for waste impoundments and we are experienced in working with regulatory bodies to obtain the required permits and to minimize delays associated with regulatory review. We routinely prepare plans and specifications for waste impoundments incorporating instrumentation to detect leakage, and we are experienced in providing construction monitoring services and working with construction contractors
