Silicon Wafer Research Services
More than 80 per cent of the global solar cell and photovoltaic module production is based on crystalline wafer technology. Further improvement of this technology requires increased cell efficiency as well as the usage of thinner wafers and a simultaneous reduction of wafer and cell breakage rates. The research activities of the »silicon wafers« group are focused on development and testing of methods for wafer manufacturing and characterization of wafers and solar cells regarding their mechanical properties.
The Fraunhofer CSP offers the whole process chain ...
The Fraunhofer CSP offers the whole process chain of wafering, starting from singulating ingots into bricks along with sawing and cleaning up to final inspection and sorting of wafers. Furthermore, different questions can be investigated using detailed microstructural analysis combined with mechanical experiments and numerical simulations. In order to reduce breakage rates and to increase production yield, investigations determining the wafer strength are applied inside complete wafer or cell manufacturing lines. Together with industrial partners, sources and reasons of wafer breakage are identified and afterwards eliminated by using experimental and numerical methods.
