Site Appraisal and Procurement
From Project Development & EPC
A wide range of criteria must be taken into account in order to assess whether an identified site is feasible for an ABO wind farm. Specialist surveys are commissioned to provide information about local conditions.
Services Overview
The key issues examined include:
All potential sites are examined for their wind power potential. We will examine the wind resource at each site and establish whether the site is exposed directly to the prevailing wind direction or if topography or forestry could disrupt airflow. ABO Wind always has at least two independent wind assessments taken to evaluate a potential site where experts determine the expected long-term resource yield of the site from a short-term perspective. This long-term potential is hard to gauge from short-term measurements because some months, and even years, produce very different outputs. In order to gain a long-term perspective on the yield potential of a site, wind indices are used. These indices are based upon output capacities of existing wind farms and other wind measurement instruments, which can give an indication about a site’s expected long-term yield.
The availability of a suitable connection to the grid is an important consideration. In some areas there is no capacity in the local grid network and a connection may not be possible without upgrading the grid, which may not take place for several years. Our electrical engineers will identify the optimum connection route and method for the project, minimizing energy loss through the connection.
The presence of other infrastructure on or near the site, including cables, pipelines, telecommunications and aviation radar, is determined. Such infrastructure can reduce the development potential of a site.
Environmental issues can affect the feasibility of a site. For example, the site may be in or near an area designated for its nature conservation importance or where the landscape is protected or sensitive, or where historic features or residential properties are found. ABO Wind undertakes an environmental screening exercise to establish where there may be any environmental constraints on development.
Consideration is given to whether the site can be accessed by the abnormally long vehicles needed to deliver the wind turbine rotor blades, towers and turbine nacelles. We will assess whether the public road network from the nearest suitable port facility could accommodate the delivery vehicles without major modifications being required and to minimise disruption to road users and local communities during the construction phase of the project.
If a site is considered to be feasible and moving toward planning submission, land leasing contracts are made. Prior to submitting a planning application, ABO Wind engages in a period of community consultation with people in the local area to inform them about the project and seek input and feedback on the proposal.
