Solar Energy Services
From Our Services
Introduction
Solar energy covers a number of well established technologies, with solar photovoltaics (PV) to produce electricity, solar water heating to provide hot water and passive solar design to use the sun's heat to reduce the use of fossil fuels for heating. There are thousands of examples of well designed systems now operating in the UK. Solar energy can provide excellent results and it won't run out. Dr Garry Jenkins is North Energy's key consultant on solar energy. North Energy has delivered an extensive range of feasibility studies for solar PV and solar water heating in school buildings, sports halls, tourist accommodation, community facilities and housing estates. North Energy has experience of planning and helping to deliver a substantial number of solar energy schemes, particularly in remote rural areas.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems use sunlight to produce electricity. They can be used in stand-alone or grid-connected installations. Solar PV systems are a fast growing area for renewable energy. In countries, such as Germany, Japan and Spain, solar PV is widespread. The UK 'Feed in Tariff' was introduced in April 2010 and has seen a huge increase in the take up of solar PV, with guaranteed income for installation owners. The scheme was so successful that the government has reduced the FIT levels and has effectively reduced the 'goldrush' and slowed the growth of the solar industry. North Energy has been pioneering solar PV for many years, and is very pleased that this 'fringe' technology is now mainstream, installed on roofs up and down the land. One of our Sheffield staff members has PV on their roof.
Solar Water HeatingSolar water heating is a well proven renewable energy technology. Domestic installations can provide 60% of annual hot water requirements for a typical home. Larger consumers of hot water such as sports, leisure and tourist facilities can benefit from solar water heating technology. From July 2011 the UK Government started the 'Renewable Heat Incentive' which will reward the owners of non-domestic solar hot water systems for the amount of renewable energy they produce on a per kWh basis. For domestic installations the Renewable Heat Premium Payment grant is in place. Three of North Energy's staff have solar water heating systems installed on thier own roofs.
Passive Solar DesignPassive solar design can help to reduce energy consumption for both heating and lighting, by careful orientation and design of the building. Passive solar design aims to minimise energy consumption and take advantage of natural daylight. Careful attention to window design, orientation and shading can make good use of free solar energy without overheating. The Passivhaus Standard and Association of Energy Conscious Building (AECB) Gold and Silver Standards are targets towards which many housing designers are aiming. North Energy is a member of the AECB. The UK Government has a target for all houses built to be Zero Carbon Homes by 2016. North Energy can help you to achieve this goal.
