“SIM is a versatile and useful expert tool which helps energy producers to analyse the watercourse in a way that is difficult to do manually,' says the product manager at Powel, Knut Aas.
“With simulations, they can analyse the implications of different scenarios. It is also important to visualise, for example, how reservoir levels will change over the next few days. This enables the operator to anticipate problems and change plans early enough to prevent flooding or overproduction,” he says.
Automated processes
The simulation process can be automated and makes the work of modelling and analysing the watercourse much quicker than before. Powel has customers all over Europe who use SIM.
“The modelling is based on historical data for the size of the po
wer plant and the generators, production schedules, water levels and flows into the turbines, and other important parameters. Based on this data, SIM can simulate what will happen in the watercourse in the future,” says Aas.
User-friendly interface
SIM has a user interface which is versatile and easy to use. The product also has the following functionality:
- Topology Builder, where you can easily build a watercourse or modify it to find out what impact a change will have.
- Historical flow calculation - calculates from actual data how much inflow has entered the turbine station. It is important to know what the inflow is to make projections forward in time.
- The results from SIM can be sent to the SCADA control system.
- SIM can also calculate reserves for the intraday market.
One of Powel’s strengths is that the software house can provide tools for the whole process from forecasting, planning and optimisation to trading.
“We automate the entire planning and production process. There are great efficiency gains to be made from using our tools. Especially if you use them together,” says Knut Aas.
SIM is closely integrated with the SINTEF product SHOP (Short Term Hydro Optimisation) and with Powel Optimal Multi Asset.
